My Experimentation throughout ART380.

I started making a paper birdcage that represented the brain, its fragile, and just like a birdcage a brain can lock things inside, that we don't want to let out, in the brains sense it could be emotions or actions.

This is 18cm deep, 26cm wide and 29cm tall.

I then added, a dragon. this caged dragon represents caged emotions of rage, and I also added a fairy, to the outside of the cage to symbolise the kind emotions we try to show people in our everyday life. but remember this its representing a small child's mind.

Here I have made paper fairies, I cut them out, and I painted them, I also stuck them together so it has a 3D flying effect.

The fairy sizes range from 5cm - 17cm.

These fairies do not have the 3D flying effect but their wings have an iridescent effect, which I thought was captured well.

These are slightly bigger at 23cm.

I cut out 30 fairies, I have only done two different designs, as they are very time consuming, and fiddly.

I hung them with clear string, and sellotape as I didn't want to damage anything, but it was only visible when I had my flash on.

I then did sketches of what I think fairies would look like. These are done in biro pen and on A4 paper.

Here is a technique called paper layering. I cut out each layer, and used foam squares to add depth when layering. I choose the colour green, because when I think of fairies I think of a woodland area.

I then framed it, and put lights behind it, this creates a shadow box effect.

When displaying the lights I changed the colours to show it also had that option, but I think the green, went well with the overall image as I had used green paper in the first place, but the red, I think the red doesn't suit the fairy as well because when I think of red I think of evil, that's not how I want to represent my fairies.

This is 27.5cm tall, and 23cm wide.

I enjoyed creating the light boxes so much I made another one.

This one is squared, 25cm.

I began to draw and paint a dragon, but I had not finished because, I thought this dragon came across as a clam being, and that is not how I have represented them throughout my work so far.

This has been done on A4 coloured paper, so it's 21cm x 29.7cm.

I wanted to, depict a dragon, so I used the cut out method, this makes for a great hanging piece.

This is aprox 23cm tall by 20cm wide.

Here I decided to use alcohol inks to create a feeling out of colour, I wanted to use colder colours to try and represent a dark and mysterious feeling when looking at it, this is speaking volumes of power to me.

So I added a silhouette of a dragon, the colour behind it looks like its aura, the power radiating from it, and danger seeping from within.

This is just smaller than an A4 piece of paper  28cm x 19.7cm

I thought about using the same technique but with different colours, but this time I used the silhouette as a stencil.

I used reds and warm colours this time so show the anger and fiery behaviour of a dragon.

But when I removed the stencil, it had seeped though, but that was excepted because the nature of alcohol inks. So I think the piece works well both ways.

Same size as the blue one.

Again using the stencil effect, I used Red, Orange, and Yellow acrylic paints. I think the stencil with the paint all over it works just as good as the finished piece. I just don't know if it would've stood out better on a white background.

This is a 30 inch by 24 inch canvas, I used gouache paints to paint this dragon eye. This is meant to symbolise looking into your soul and mind, and finding the darkness you don't want anyone to see. the darkness being your mental health issues.

Untitled_Artwork.jpg

This is my design for the front of my blurb book, I came up with this title, because my project is about fantasy and fairy tales and how it shapes our minds, even from the very beginning. That is why I used the words "Once upon a" like the start of every fairy tale. The words are meant to have a hint of the dragon, that's why they are green and have a scale effect (foreshadowing). The background is meant to be whimsical, to symbolise the fantasy and imagination of the mind aspects of my project. The word "mind" is meant to stand out, be the odd word out, representing how we as people feel, when we are going through a tough time with our mental health. We feel as though we are alone, as if we are the only ones battling our inner "dragons" but we aren't that's what I had in mind when drawing this piece.

I created this on my iPad, using Procreate.

I created the back of my blurb book in the same design, just with the ending of every fairy tale, with an added little twist, "not so happily ever after" I did this as my last piece of work before you see the back page is a deconstruction of the mind. linking back to the fateful words on the back.

Untitled_Artwork (1).jpg

This is my take on how your mind looks as you grow and the dragon has been released, you have fought so hard to not let it out but this is what is left of your adult mind.

This is the piece that made me look into Deconstructivism, and Angela Dela Cruz.

This piece is made out of A2 paper at the size of 40cm x 64cm x 49cm
